North Indian vs South Indian Charts: How to Read Both

North Indian and South Indian charts are two ways to draw the same Vedic birth chart. North Indian charts keep houses in fixed positions while signs change with the Ascendant. South Indian charts keep signs in fixed positions while houses are counted from the Ascendant. The astrology stays the same; the map changes.

The idea, at a glance

The same Moon, on two different maps.

North StyleHouse 1CancerMH11Taurus

House positions stay fixed.

South Style

Sign positions stay fixed.

Fictional example: Cancer Lagna, Moon in Taurus, house eleven. M marks the Moon. Unspecified planets are omitted. Neither drawing changes the calculation.

One sky, two maps

If one chart looks like a diamond and another like a window frame, neither has misplaced your planets. You are seeing different diagram conventions. With identical birth information, zodiac settings and calculation methods, changing the drawing leaves the grahas in the same signs and houses.

Think of opening two maps of your neighbourhood. The colours and layout may differ; your home has not moved. Here the first useful skill is learning what stays fixed on each map, before looking up the meaning of any placement.

North Indian: the houses stay put

The North Indian layout uses a square divided into diamond and triangular compartments. House one is the top central diamond. The other house positions remain fixed around it. The numbers commonly written inside these compartments identify signs: 1 means Aries, 2 Taurus, and so on through 12 for Pisces.

This is the detail that catches beginners: a 4 in the first-house compartment can mean Cancer rising, not house four. Some contemporary charts write sign names and house labels separately, which makes the distinction easier. Find the chart's legend before deciding what a number represents.

South Indian: the signs stay put

In the familiar South Indian layout, twelve boxes run around an open centre. Each sign keeps its position: Aries is usually the second box along the top row, with the remaining signs following in zodiac order. The Ascendant marker tells you which sign begins house one in a whole-sign reading.

From that sign, count one through twelve, including the starting sign. The same Taurus box can be house two in one person's chart and house eleven in another. Its sign stays Taurus; its house number depends on the rising sign.

Find the same Moon in both

Our fictional teaching chart has Cancer rising and the Moon at 17 degrees Taurus. Count Cancer as one, Leo as two, and continue until Taurus: eleven. In North Style, the Moon belongs in the fixed eleventh-house compartment, carrying Taurus or sign number 2. In South Style, it belongs in the fixed Taurus box, which is house eleven here.

Try this little treasure hunt on the two drawings: locate the Ascendant, then Taurus, then the Moon. Once you can tell the same placement story in either layout, the unfamiliar shapes become much less intimidating.

Choose the drawing that helps you notice

North Style can make house relationships easier to spot; South Style can make sign positions easier to recognize. Familiarity matters more than choosing the supposedly correct region. Vinodini's calculator offers both views so you can learn the pattern that feels most legible.

If two charts genuinely disagree, compare their birth inputs, ayanamsha and house method. A drawing preference cannot explain a changed planetary longitude. Once the labels are clear, return to the more interesting question: how do these placements connect?

A few questions you may have

Which Indian chart style is more accurate?

Neither drawing is inherently more accurate. Accuracy depends on the birth inputs and calculation settings; the layouts can display exactly the same results.

Are the numbers in a North Indian chart house numbers?

Often they are sign numbers: Aries is 1 through Pisces as 12. Houses occupy fixed compartments. Check the labels because some calculators display both.

Can I switch styles without recalculating my birth chart?

Yes. The North Style and South Style views on this calculator reorganize the display of the existing placements.
