Ashtakavarga Explained: Bindus, BAV and the 337-Point Total

Ashtakavarga is a Jyotish system that counts contributions from eight reference points to assess signs in relation to the seven visible grahas. Bhinnashtakavarga gives an individual graha's table; Sarvashtakavarga combines the seven tables. In the usual unreduced calculation, their total is 337. The distribution varies between charts; the total does not.

The idea, at a glance

Eight contributors. Seven tables. A total of 337.

One planetary table uses a 0–8 scale; seven tables give a theoretical 0–56 scale for a sign. The grand total across all signs is 337.

A set of counts, not a grade for your life

A table of numbers can look reassuringly decisive. Ashtakavarga is more interesting than a score labelled good or bad: it records a network of traditional relationships. The word's eight-fold idea refers to the contributing reference points, the seven visible grahas and Lagna. It does not mean there are eight zodiac signs.

The technique has a substantial classical treatment in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika. Its rules are reproducible calculations within Jyotish. That mathematical structure should be distinguished from evidence that a number guarantees an event in someone's life.

BAV: one graha's table

Bhinnashtakavarga, often shortened to BAV, is calculated separately for the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. For each target graha, prescribed positions are counted from each of the eight contributors. A sign can receive from zero to eight supportive contributions before reductions.

We call these supportive points bindus here, a common modern display convention. Some textual and software traditions use bindu and rekha differently, so check which mark means support in the table you are reading. The glyph alone is not a reliable key.

SAV: the tables together

Sarvashtakavarga, or SAV, combines those seven BAV tables sign by sign, giving a theoretical scale of zero to 56 for a sign. In the standard aggregate, the fixed planetary totals are Sun 48, Moon 49, Mars 39, Mercury 54, Jupiter 56, Venus 52 and Saturn 39. Together they make 337.

The overall total is a useful arithmetic check, not a personal achievement. What changes from chart to chart is where the contributions fall across the twelve signs. Lagna participates as a contributor, but adding a separate Lagna table produces a different aggregate from the seven-graha SAV described here.

Read a number beside the question

Suppose a fictional BAV table gives one sign six supportive points and another three. That describes different contributions within that graha's table. It is not a 75 percent versus 37.5 percent chance of happiness. Likewise, an SAV score cannot be compared directly with a BAV score: they have different scales.

Astrologers consider these tables alongside natal conditions, relevant houses, planetary periods and transits. Classical procedures also include reductions, or shodhana, for particular applications. A reduced table is not expected to preserve the same 337 total, so identify the stage of calculation before comparing screenshots.

From counting support to noticing support

For a Western reader, think of this as a structured cross-check within the reading, rather than another personality label. Its most useful first lesson is to ask how an astrologer reached a conclusion. Which graha's table is this? Which sign and house are being discussed? Which timing method brings it into the conversation?

A reflective companion question is simpler: where do I have support that I could use more thoughtfully? That practice does not require a high score. The calculator here currently provides D1, D9 and planetary periods; an Ashtakavarga table is not yet one of its outputs.

A few questions you may have

Why does Sarvashtakavarga add up to 337?

In the standard unreduced seven-graha calculation, the seven fixed BAV totals are 48, 49, 39, 54, 56, 52 and 39. Their sum is 337; the distribution across signs varies.

Are Rahu and Ketu included in the standard tables?

The standard seven-graha BAV and SAV tables described here use Sun through Saturn as targets. The eight contributors are those seven plus Lagna, rather than Rahu and Ketu.

Does a low Ashtakavarga score mean something bad will happen?

A number is one traditional factor, not an event or a verdict. The table type, calculation stage, whole chart and timing context all need to be considered.
